In tonight’s opening scenes the dad of two was seen struggling mentally in camp after being diagnosed with ADHD and a sleepless night.

As he sat on his bed he said: “I’m mentally spiralling. I can’t remember if I’ve taken my medication twice or not. I can’t remember what happened to my knife and fork.”

Dani Dyer asked him: “Do you feel the worse you’ve felt in a little while.”

As he broke down in tears he confessed: “It’s uncontrollable.”

Dani replied: “Oh it’s alright, come here, don’t be silly, it’s going to be fine,” as she comforted him.

The cameras snapped to a previous interview where Ryan revealed: “Before I got diagnosed with ADHD there was a lot of confusion as to my life and how I managed things and all the things that went through my head.

“My brain does not switch off. I could be absolutely dog tired and I do not go to sleep.”

The staff were concerned about Ryan’s health and called in course psychiatrist Dr Gareth for advice.

Former Royal Marine Commando Jason Fox, aka Foxy, said: “I was thinking how can we help him? And we can’t really because it’s not like he’s thinking wrong, he’s got an actual issue.”

Dr Gareth then explained: “I think he hasn’t got the tools available to him. Today is going to be chaotic. If he was to go further it could be detrimental.

“He’s more likely to go home with negative experiences than positive experiences.”

Foxy said: “Good mental health in the special forces is imperative because the whole thing is hinged on your ability to operate under extreme mental pressure.”

Ryan was then called in to speak to Foxy and he revealed he was withdrawing from the challenge.

What is neurodiversity?

You may have heard of autism and ADHD before.

These conditions come under the umbrella term of neurodiversity.

Neurodiversity is a term that refers to the natural variation in how human brains work.

It is rooted in the idea that neurological differences, such as those associated with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette’s syndrome, and other conditions, are a normal and valuable part of human diversity rather than deficits or disorders that need fixing.

Rather, society should find ways to be more inclusive and accommodating, such as in schools and the workplace.

Here’s a closer look at two of the key conditions:

ADHD

ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how individuals focus, regulate their impulses, and manage their energy levels.

Symptoms depend on the type; inattention causes challenges with focusing, organisation and time management, hyperactivity causes excessive energy or restlessness, and impulsivity causes a person to act without thinking or struggle to wait their turn.

People can be predominately one type or a mix of the two and symptoms are varied and unique to individuals.

While living with ADHD is challenging, people often find unique strengths within their condition, such as the ability to hyperfocus on something they find interesting, problem-solving skills and creativity.

Autism

Autism is described as a “spectrum” because it encompasses a wide range of traits and abilities.

Common features include difficulty with social communication, such as reading facial expressions or tone, repetitive behaviours and routine, sensitivity to stimulation of the senses, e.g. bright lights or loud noises, and detailed, literal thinking.

Autism can be challenging, including due to a lack of understanding. But there are key strategies to help those with it thrive.

He said: “I would love to be available for all of the challenge…but I am going to withdraw.”

Foxy admitted: “I think it is the right move because ultimately this is just a course. You’ve got the rest of your life to embrace.

“But please hold your head high, you’ve been awesome.”

Later in the episode, former England cricketer Graeme Swann was withdrawn by staff because of an arm injury.

A tearful Graeme told directing staff, after becoming the eighth recruit to leave the course: “It’s been amazing, it’s been emotional, f*** me, you can break people can’t you.”

British sprinter and bobsledder Toby Olubi was also withdrawn by staff at the end of a hostage task for apparently not pulling his weight.

As the ninth contestant to depart, Toby, 38, said: “It’s been a pleasure guys.”
