Neighbours may have bowed out of the TV landscape on Thursday, but there are hints that the long-running Aussie soap might be heading for its second reboot in three years.

The final storyline focused on whether the neighbours of Ramsay Street would block a freeway destined to destroy their homes or relocate to two new rival developments.

Fans were left hanging as they watched three of the show’s most beloved characters leave the decision to go or stay until the last minute.

The climax saw Susan (Jackie Woodbine) determined to fight the coming demolition, while husband Karl (Alan Fletcher) was resigned to leave.

‘Other communities have beaten the odds. We could be one of them,’ she told Karl and Paul (Stefan Dennis), who is behind one of the new developments, Robinson Towers.

In a teasing nod to a future Neighbours spin-off, Susan added: ‘All day I have had this sense that we’ve been here before.

‘And we came out bigger and better than before,’ she continued.

‘Yeah, I suppose that’s true,’ agreed Paul.

The scene ended with Susan declaring: ‘I love our neighbours…

‘So, what do we do?’ Paul asked as the scene showed an aerial view of beloved Ramsay Street.

Fans took to social media to gush over the prospect of another reboot.

‘Please come back… I miss you already,’ said one heartbroken viewer.

‘Watch this space the way it has ended,’ added another.

‘I don’t believe this to be the end! Like Susan said… we’re gonna fight for this!’ wrote one more.

There was a similar reaction on X.

In a teasing nod to a future Neighbours spin-off, Susan added: ‘All day I have had this sense that we’ve been here before.

‘Still crying, I was not ready to say goodbye again after a lifetime as a fan,’ said a Neighbours regular.

‘Praying someone brings my old friends back someday so as they are not done. A sad day.’

Another fan saw hope in the finale for another revival.

‘I think today’s episode was a see ya for now,’ they said.

‘No big finale, I think that’s so it’ll be easier to take out of the box and continue where the show left off.’

‘I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’m so sad it came to this,’ another shared.

‘I hope it comes back some way someday. Thank you to Everyone involved in the show over the years. Much love to you all.’

It comes after Neighbours executive producer Jason Herbison told TV Week that the plot for the finale left open the chance for a reboot, even though the Neighbours Nunawading studios and backlot are now no more.

Neighbours first announced it was coming to an end two years ago when Channel 5, who part-funded the soap for UK viewers, pulled out of their deal.

Despite a dramatic rescue by Amazon Freevee, the soap was axed for a second time earlier this year.

Sadly, the finale was a ratings disappointment for Channel 10, landing at the bottom of Thursday’s Top 30 programs with an average national audience of 211,000.
