According to People, today the star of the films “Leon”, “Black Swan” and “Proximity” presented his new film “The Gallery Girl” at the Sundance Film Festival. Portman noted that many of the strongest films of the year were directed by women, but never received the recognition they deserved:

“You just see the barriers at every level because so many haven’t been recognized at the awards. ‘Sorry Girl’, ‘Left-Handed Girl’, ‘Hedda’ and ‘The Testament of Anne Lee’… There are extraordinary films that came out this year that I think a lot of people love, but they don’t get the credit they deserve.”

According to her, even after a difficult path – from finding financing to participating in festivals – the films of female directors are often overlooked by award committees. “We still have a lot of work to do,” the actress emphasized.

As you know, this year the only woman nominated for the Oscar for Best Director was Chloe Zhao for the film Hamnet. Among the ten films presented in the “Best Film” category, this is the only work directed by a woman.

As previously reported by UNIAN, films dealing with the war in Ukraine were not included in the list of Oscar 2026 nominees. At the same time, there is a documentary about a teacher who works in a Russian school.
