Narcos: Mexico actor dies at age 55 from ‘unknown causes’ after playing a drug smuggler on the hit Netflix series

One of the stars of the popular Netflix series Narcos: Mexico, Gerardo Taracena, has died at age 55.

So far the cause of death, which has been listed as ‘unknown,’ has not been shared or even speculated about.

His death was announced by The Mexican Academy of Film Art and Sciences on Sunday. The organization called him a ‘fundamental actor in Mexican cinema, whose presence on screen left an intense, honest, and profoundly human mark.’ 

Taracena was born in Mexico City in 1970 and studied Dramatic arts in the University Center of Theater of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

He went on to work on TV and in movies as well becoming a professional dancer.

His girlfriend Mimi was played by Sosie Bacon, who is the daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick

He starred in the 2006 movie Apocalypto about the ancient Mayan kingdom at the height of their power; the film was directed by Mel Gibson.

Taracena also worked with Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning on the 2004 crime thriller Man On Fire.

He had a role in the 2007 movie The Violin with Ángel Tavira. And he won praise for his role in the 2009 film Sin Nombre with Paulina Gaitán. 

The star also had a small part opposite Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts in The Mexican in 2001.

But Taracena found his greatest success on the small screen in the Narcos spinoff Narcos: Mexico which ran for three seasons.

The actor played drug smuggler Pablo Acosta for 11 episodes from 2018 to 2020. 

His wealthy American girlfriend Mimi Webb Miller was played by Sosie Bacon, who is the daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick. 

The cast included Michael Peña, Diego Luna, Tenoch Huerta, Alyssa Diaz, Joaquín Cosío, Alejandro Edda and Matt Letscher.  

Narcos: Mexico looked at Mexican drug trafficking in the 1980s when Felix Gallardo ran the Guadalajara Cartel then built an empire of drug dealers.

Taracena found his greatest success on the small screen in the Narcos spinoff Narcos: Mexico which ran for three seasons. The poster featured Diego Luna and Michael Pena

DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Pena) tries to bust the cartel but meets a horrific end so Walt Breslin (played by Scoot McNairy, the partner of Bacon) gets revenge.

The actor also played Cesar ‘Batman’ Guemes for 11 episodes of Queen Of The South from 2016 until 2017. 

And he appeared on 32 episodes of Perseguidos fat the same time. 

Taracena was well recognized in his native Mexico.

He received nominations for three Ariel Awards, which are awarded to the best Mexican films. 

The New York Post reported that he had four projects in the works, two in post-production and two in pre-production.
