Mia Market, the international film and TV industry event, unveiled the lineup for its 2024 event, which runs Oct. 14-18 in Rome.

Keynote speakers this year will include Sony Pictures Television Studios president Katherine Pope —who has overseen such global hits as The Last of Us, Outlander, The Boys and Cobra Kai — the Oscar-winning documentarian Odessa Rae (Navalny) and production veteran Clayton Townsend, known for such features as Natural Born Killers, Born on the Fourth of July and Bridesmaids, who was an executive producer on Netflix’s Italian-set thriller Ripley starring Andrew Scott.

On the non-scripted side, Ed Havard, Senior Vice President of Unscripted Programming at Universal International Studios, and Monica Rodman, Executive Vice President of Development at Universal Television Alternative Studio, will touch down in Rome to talk about the future of unscripted in a panel focused on the European production market.

“The idea is to have stories at the real center of every kind of activity we have planned for this year edition,” said Mia director Gaia Tridente.

When Mia launched 10 years ago, the global television industry was in the middle of an unprecedented boom as international streamers pumped money into high-end drama production. Those halcyon days are long done and cost-consciousness is back in style.

“There are some constraints in terms of budget of the big streamers,” Tridente admitted, “What we have seen is a new wave of co-productions. In that sense, a market like ours is [highly favored] because we received something like 600 projects for our co-production market this year. I think this number is really the key to understanding what is happening nowadays in our industry. More and more companies are joining forces, and not only with international co-pro but also national co-productions. [It is becoming] a new way of financing, even for big shows.”

Of those 600+ pitches, Mia has picked the most promising film, series, documentary and animated pitches to present at this year’s co-pro market and pitching forum. The TV drama section includes 14 series projects from 12 countries and includes promising concepts including The Aosawa Murders, a U.S./Japanese crime series based on Riku Onda’s best-selling novel of the same name; Bat Out of Hell, a Canadian project on the life of Formula 1 driver Gilles Villeneuve; and Viktoria Frankenstein, a German series that reimagines Mary Shelley’s classic monster tale with a female protagonist.

Mia 2024 will feature more than 80 panels, presentations, seminars and workshops over the five-day event. There are also several market screenings of titles for international buyers, including Beta Cinema’s period action movie William Tell from director Nick Hamm starring The Northman actor Claes Bang, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival; the Milad Tangshir-directed drama Anywhere Anytime, which first bowed in Venice and is being sold worldwide by Fandango Sales; and the Argentinian drama Surfacing from directors Cecilia Atán and Valeria Pivato, which had its world premiere at San Sebastian and Visit Films is selling.

New this year is MIA XR, a showcase of interactive and VR works that features 13 titles, including six world premieres.

The conference program will focus on broader industry trends and will include sessions on the challenges of linking up public and private equity-backed financing for European productions; creating new environmentally sustainable workflows and standards; and the impact of A.I. on TV and film production.
