The Saturday Night Live star and Superman actor are set to play Shrek’s sons Fergus and Farkle in the upcoming film, with the DreamWorks Animation project’s Instagram account sharing the news on Thanksgiving morning.
In a video post, Hernández and Gisondo were shown getting into character, with Hernández even donning green body paint to channel his ogre offspring role.
“I might have gone a bit overboard,” Hernández wrote, as he shared photos of himself in his Shrek best.
Gisondo, who shared a photo of himself sporting a Shrek hat, advised Hernández via text message “Buddy these look amazing but you know we’re just doing the voices right?”
Cue a photo of a surprised, green Hernández.
Hernández, known for his role on SNLhas also appeared in Happy Gilmore 2 and Dying for Sex.
Gisondo played Jimmy Olsen in James Gunn’s Superman reboot for Warner Bros. and his credits also include Licorice Pizza, Booksmart, Vacation, The Righteous Gemstones and Santa Clarita Diet. He’s also set to play Ben Stiller and Teri Polo’s characters’ son, and Ariana Grande’s character’s fiancé, in the upcoming fourth Meet the Parents movie Focker-in-Law.
Universal Pictures is set to release Shrek 5 on June 30, 2027. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all set to reprise their voice roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. Zendaya has also joined the cast as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia.
Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn are set to direct Shrek 5along with Minions: The Rise of Gru co-director Brad Ableson. Vernon directed Shrek 2 and Madagascar 2 and is familiar to audiences as the voice of Gingerbread Man in the Shrek films. Dohrn worked as a writer on the second and third Shrek films and served as head of story on the fourth film. He’s also lent his voice to the franchise as Rumpelstiltskin.
Shrek Forever After producer Gina Shay and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri will produce Shrek 5.
The nearly 25-year-old franchise, which also spawned two Puss in Boots spinoffs starring Antonio Banderas, has grossed nearly $3 billion at the global box office. The first film, released in 2001, won the Oscar for best animated feature.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about revisiting his role as Donkey for Shrek 5Murphy said, “I’ve always said I would do Shrek forever. Donkey is a great character to play. I love the whole cast. So I was excited when it was like, ‘Hey, they’re doing another one,’ and they want to do a Donkey one, too. I’m totally into it. I come in too hot, every vocal session.”
