Cline will play the star’s girlfriend.
Universal has set a Feb. 5, 2027 release date for the project.
Apatow, who has had ties to Universal since his directorial debut in 2005 with The 40-Year-Old Virginis also producing the feature with Powell.
Dan Cohen, Powell’s partner at the duo’s Barnstorm banner, which has a first look deal with the studio, is producing as well. Kevin Misher, who once acted as Universal’s president of production in the late 1990s, is producing through his shingle, Misher Films.
Senior executive vp of production development Erik Baiers and director of production development Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project on behalf of Universal.
Cline has been starring in Outer Banksone of Netflix’s top shows, since 2020. The series’ fifth and final season is due to premiere later this year.
In the film world, the actress was seen in Netflix’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery as well as in Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel and Amazon’s romantic drama, The Map That Leads to You. She next appears with Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz in Lionsgate’s Day Drinkerout later this year.
