If you’re looking to build a TV for the long haul, OLED models now look like a more reliable choice than traditional LCDs.
OLED TVs are much more reliable than models with IPS and VA matrices and last more than 10,000 hours / Screenshot RTINGSThe RTINGS resource published the results of a large-scale test on the durability of TVs and monitors with different types of panels. For three years, the authors subjected hundreds of models to extreme loads, simulating years of continuous work, turning the brightness to the maximum.
During the tests, 20 TVs completely failed, another 24 had various damages. At the same time, most models were able to work for more than 10,000 hours, which is equivalent to four years of active use for 7 hours a day, writes Tom’s Hardware.
OLED panels performed best, including WOLED and QD-OLED, both of which have impressively low failure rates.
Which display lasts longer: OLED or LCDContrary to widespread fears about burn-in, OLED panels showed the highest stability. It is noted that problems with image degradation occurred only in extreme conditions. With normal use, according to experts, there is practically no risk of burnout.
On the contrary, the worst statistics were shown by LCD TVs with side (Edge-lit) illumination, where the failure of one LED often led to the failure of the entire system.
RTINGS photoThe most reliable brands, according to the test results, were LG and TCL. At LG, out of 24 tested TVs, only one model completely failed, and TCL “lost” one model out of ten right before the end of the test. At the same time, at LG, most of the failures fell on the LCD model, and not on the OLED.
Other leading brands such as Samsung and Sony also performed well, but the limited number of models tested does not allow for definitive conclusions about the entire range. Therefore, some brands, such as Insignia and Toshiba, had a 100% rejection rate.
RTINGS photoThe study also debunked the myth that an expensive TV will necessarily last longer: some more affordable models “survived” premium devices. However, cheap TVs are practically not subject to repair due to the cheapening of the assembly.
Experts note that such stress tests do not fully reflect real operating conditions, but they clearly demonstrate the potential of technologies.
What can be said with certainty is that modern OLED TVs are no longer a risky choice and will last longer than traditional LCD models under active use.
Previously, experts told why your TV can show worse than it should. The reason often lies in one hidden HDMI setting that many users simply do not know about,
It also explained to users what is the difference between a gold-plated HDMI cable and an ordinary one and whether it is worth paying more.
