The drone can perform completely different combat tasks, from reconnaissance and information gathering to strike missions.
Also, while the Lamprey is attached to another vessel, it can deploy a special generator / Lockheed Martin photoThe American company Lockheed Martin for the first time presented its new underwater drone Lamprey, which was developed exclusively with its own funds.
As Defense Express writes, Lamprey (translated as Lamprey) is the name of a whole family of parasitic fish that use a round mouth with a bunch of teeth to cling to other fish and parasitize them.
Lockheed Martin’s Lamprey is equipped with sixteen imitations of such suction cups, thanks to which it can cling to the bottom of ships and submarines, stealthily moving towards its target.
It is noted that while the Lamprey is attached to another vessel, it can deploy a special generator to recharge its batteries. That way, when the drone arrives at its target, it will have already charged batteries.
The Lamprey has a modular payload bay. Therefore, it can perform completely different combat tasks, from reconnaissance and information gathering to strike missions.
“In particular, three payload options are now demonstrated: false targets capable of simulating submarine signatures, which can be used, for example, to distract the enemy and detect their location. Then there is an armament option with small torpedoes to attack small ships or submarines. And also, an option with three deployed drone launchers, designed for both reconnaissance and strike missions.” – the material says.
However, it is noted that the user will be able to adapt other weapon options on board.
According to analysts, other characteristics, as well as a set of on-board equipment, are currently not named, but apparently the Lamprey will have very small dimensions, and accordingly a small radius of action (without taking into account “hitchhiking” and recharging on the way).
It is also noted that it is not known how it is navigated and controlled in an underwater position over long distances. However, the concept already looks quite interesting, especially considering that the main application area will obviously be in the Indo-Pacific region, with an extremely high flow of commercial vessels that the Lamprey will be able to attach to and travel directly to the shores of China.
Drones at war in Ukraine – what is knownAs UNIAN reported, the Russians were able to implement anti-drone protection by creating surfaces that rotate at a very high speed. The first collected sample is already being tested in the occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region within the limits of the activity of the so-called 70th motorized rifle regiment.
A video by propagandists for central television showed the operation of a ground-based robotic complex, the sole purpose of which, it seems, is to test this defense system. It consists in untwisting the cables at high speed, which are meant to literally repel the attacks of FPV drones.
