You can dive into a world we rarely see and travel back to the early days of the Dardenne brothers with German writer-director Kilian Armando Friedrich’s debut fiction feature I Understand Your Displeasure (Ich verstehe Ihren Unmut), which will world premiere in the Panorama program of the Berlin International Film Festival on Friday, Feb. 13.

The filmmaker, who has made shorts and co-directed the 2023 documentary Nuclear Nomadsco-wrote the script with Tünde Sautier and Daniel Kunz. Louis Dickhaut and Frederik Seeberger handled the cinematography, with editing by Leila Fatima Keita and Friedrich. The cast of non-professional actors stars Sabine Thalau, Nada Kosturin, Werner Posselt, Sadibou Diabang, and Nigyar Velagic.

I Understand Your Displeasure takes us inside a service sector that remains mostly hidden from many of us: the cut-throat cleaning industry. The movie follows Heike, 59, who works as a customer service manager at a cleaning company. Her job, which keeps you breathless even from the safety of your chair or sofa, sees her mediating between clients, company management and cleaning staff on a daily basis. And now, the firm is having problems with a key subcontractor because Heike tried to poach one of his “unofficial” workers. The subcontractor uses his leverage by threatening to stop his collaboration unless Heike secures more hours and income for him. But to meet his demands, she must dismiss one of her own employees, who is close to her friend Taja.

Where will things end as she “finds herself increasingly caught between her responsibility for her own employees and the conditions of the low-wage sector,” as a synopsis notes? “Heike must decide how far she is willing to go to meet the job’s ruthless demands.”

Well, you have to watch the film to find out how this one plays out. However, THR can now exclusively premiere a first trailer for I Understand Your Displeasurewhich was produced by WennDann Film, with Films Boutique handling world sales.

Check out the trailer below. But be warned! It may leave you drained.
