Before “Arcane”, there was simply no big-budget adult animation in the Western market, shares Mark Merrill.
This was mentioned by Mark Merrill, co-founder of Riot Games and one of the creators of League of Legends in his comment on Reddit. According to him, it was not so important to Riot the money that they will spend on the creation of the series. Moreover, initially at the stage of budget approval there were talks about 5 seasons, which meant much higher costs. But showrunner Christian Linke intended the show for 2 seasons from the very beginning, and insisted that it stay that way.
Merrill explained that one minute of Arcane costs about a third of a minute of any Pixar cartoon. This is quite expensive, considering that the total duration of “Arcane” is approximately 720 minutes, which is 7 times longer than any feature film of the same Pixar.
However, Riot thought it was worth it. According to Merrill, before the release of Arcane, there was simply no big-budget adult-oriented animation in the Western market.
All this led to the fact that Arcane became the most expensive animated series in the history of cinema. Showrunners Christian Linke and Alex Yee revealed where the entire $250 million budget went.
