A source has shared that there is renewed interest in Victoria Beckham’s old music (Picture: Victor Lerena/EPA/Shutterstock) Victoria Beckham has quietly pulled off one of the most surreal chart moments of the year – and it may mean her music will soon appear in movies.
Not Such an Innocent Girl, Beckham’s 2001 solo debut, has long been treated as a footnote in post-Spice Girls history, but it has now found new life thanks to an online campaign that began with memes and ended with genuine commercial clout.
Fans started downloading and buying the song en masse following Brooklyn Beckham’s shock accusations against his family earlier this month.
Among Brooklyn’s claims was that his mother danced ‘inappropriately’ at his 2022 wedding to Nicola Peltz, leading fans to use the 2001 song as a kind of meme and causing it to surge up the charts.
Now, a music industry source has told Metro that the unexpected chart performance has sent licensing departments into a frenzy.
Virgin Records, which owns the exclusive rights to Beckham’s only album, has reportedly been stunned by how many copies are suddenly selling worldwide.
The debut album sold about 1000 copies (Picture: Sony) ‘Virgin owns the exclusive rights to Victoria’s only album and can’t believe how many records it selling worldwide after the memes went viral. Sony owns the rights to Out of Your Mind, but Virgin has the album Not Such an Innocent Girl is on,’ the source said.
‘The success of the record this week is creating new opportunities for the company because music licensing companies are begging to use the material for films and adverts.
‘The label was acquired by Universal Music a few years ago and signed acts like Jessie J, David Asante and Naughty Boy through Darco Artist Partnerships, but Victoria’s record has been the surprise hit this year. It’s good business for everyone.’
The song marked her solo debut (Picture: Dave Hogan/Getty Images) Despite narrowly missing the Official Singles Chart Top 100 last week, the track surged to number one on both the Official Singles Sales Chart and the Official Download Chart.
According to figures from the Official Charts Company, sales and streams rocketed by an eye-watering 19,615%, making it the UK’s best-selling single of the week.
Part of the appeal lies in the song’s title, which has become an accidental punchline, of course, but Not Such an Innocent Girl also lands perfectly in the current Y2K revival.
The song’s resurgence was sparked by Brooklyn Beckham’s claims about his family (Picture: ©Karwai Tang) When it was first released, the single was overshadowed by a titanic chart battle with Kylie Minogue’s Can’t Get You Out of My Head, which went on to dominate 2001.
Beckham debuted at number six, shifting a respectable 35,000 units and securing one of four solo top-10 hits she would eventually score.
The track also opened her self-titled debut album, released later that year.
Could Victoria’s music career be making a comeback? (Picture: Mark Cuthbert/UK Press via Getty Images) As the last Spice Girls member to go solo, Beckham entered a hostile critical environment, and reviews at the time were mixed at best.
In total, she released five singles, complete with music videos, before stepping away from music entirely.
The album sold around 100,000 copies and peaked just inside the top 10, but it seems her family feud may have unexpectedly revived her music career over two decades later.
