Emilia Perez BAFTA shock as snubbed Mexican film only wins two gongs despite garnering impressive 11 nods as fears for movie deepen amid Karla Sofía Gascón scandal

Fears for Mexican movie Emilia Perez deepens amid the Karla Sofía Gascón scandal as the film only received two awards out of a total 11 nods.

Despite it’s starring cast including Selena Gomez, only Zoe Saldana picked up Best Supporting Actress while the film itself bagged the award for Best Film Not In The English Language.

In recent weeks, Emilia Perez has garnered mixed reviews following disgraced Spanish actress Karla.

Karla, 52, was left off the BAFTA guest list, after several of her offensive social media posts resurfaced and sparked controversy amid allegations of racism, homophobia and body shaming.

The film follows Karla Sofia Gascon’s title character, a drug lord who enlists a lawyer (Zoe Saldana) to help him fake his own death and transition into a woman named Emilia Perez. 

Zoe couldn’t hold back her tears or her foul language as she accepted Best Supporting Actress gong for Emilia Perez at The Royal Festival Hall.

The actress, 46, was quickly pulled off camera for swearing as she shouted ‘f***, f***, f***’ when the countdown hurried her to finish her speech. 

Zoe was in floods of tears as she accepted the award, admitting it is ‘so validating and a true honour’ to received the gong after being previously told by dialect coaches that her British accent wasn’t going to work.

Listing off her thank yous, Zoe said: ‘Oh my god I’m getting a countdown. F*** f*** f***!’

She was all smiles as she accepted the award from Colman Domingo and Adam Pearson. 

Zoe looked nothing short of sensational during the evening as she graced the star-studded red carpet in a dramatic black lace gown. 

She showed off her amazing figure in the semi-sheer ensemble which boasted an eye catching off the shoulder neckline with a huge mesh collar. 

Styling her long tresses in neat waves, Zoe elevated her frame in a pair of towering heels and accessorised with a silver dazzling necklace.  

The biggest night in British film returned with actor David Tennant as host and an array of guest presenters on hand to deliver awards throughout the night.

Meanwhile Jesse Eisenberg, 41, accepted his co-star Kieran Culkin’s Best Supporting Actor gong for his starring role in A Real Pain.

Picking up Kieran’s gong, which he admitted is the fifth time he has received an award on his behalf this season, Jesse joked: ‘It’s confirmed what I always thought… we have a similar life but his is 27% better than mine.’

Jesse, who directed and starred in A Real Pain, also collected Best Original Screenplay gong and shared an emotional speech on the stage. 

Picking up the movie’s second prize, he admitted: ‘I didn’t write anything because I didn’t think I’d win. I want to share this with my wife, who didn’t come because she didn’t think I’d win.’

Orlando Bloom and Vanesa Kirby graced the stage to present Jesse’s BAFTA award at the ceremony. 

Conclave, which is up for a staggering 10 nominations, picked up two awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing.

$6million Independent movie Anora, which beat blockbuster movies at the Critics Choice Awards last week, picked up Best Casting gong.

Dune: Part Two picked up two awards, one for Best Sound and another for Best Visual Effects.

Wallace and Gromit also bagged two BAFTAs during the evening, beating Flow, Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot.

Lost for words on winning yet another gong, the animated film’s creator Nick Park said: ‘I didn’t actually write a second speech.’ 

Starting off the night strong, the makers of Wallace and Gromit won Best Children’s and Family Film award.

Accepting the award, Nick said: ‘It is such a wonderful privilege to be working at Aardman every day with such obscenely talented artists and craftspeople.’

Conclave picked up a gong for Best Adapted Screenplay, it’s first ever BAFTA award, beating out A Complete Unknown, Emilia Perez, Nickel Boys and Sing Sing.

Kneecap director and writer Rich Peppiatt won the Outstanding Debut gong and shared a touching tribute to ‘everyone who is out there fighting that fight.’

Jon. M. Chu’s Wicked unsurprisingly received the Best Production Design award, their first BAFTA of the night.
