The purchasing power of the hryvnia is higher than the official course shows.

The publication notes that at the time of the study, the popular Big Poppy burger cost $ 6.01 in the US, while in Ukraine – 132 hryvnias. Going out of the idea that Big Poppy would have to cost the same world, then at these prices in Ukraine and the US, the dollar would have to cost 21.96 hryvnia. This is the “Maka Big index”. But the official exchange rate of the Ukrainian currency is actually 41.86 hryvnias per dollar – 47.5% less than the “Maka index”.
According to the Economist calculations, today the national currency of Ukraine has ranked eighth in the ranking of the most undervalued in the world. Before the Ukrainian hryvnia in the ranking of the most undervalued currencies are: Egyptian pound (undervalued by 57.9%), Indonesian Rs (57%), Indian Rs (56.2%), Taiwanese dollar (55.7%), Vietnamese) (51.6%) South African Rand (49.8%).
At the same time, the revalued world currencies of the analytics included: Swiss Frank, Uruguay Peso, Norwegian Crown, Swedish Crown, Danish Crown, Euro and British Pound.
The Economist invented the “Maka” index in 1986. It is based on the idea that Big Poppy contains a wide range of local products and thereby should serve as an indicator of the real purchasing power of currency, which is not always equal to the official exchange rate. Although the “Mac Index” is considered a joking indicator in general, it actually reflects certain economic trends in the country, which, for example, is clearly visible on the list of the most undervalued and most overestimated currencies.
The dollar in UkraineAs reported by UNIAN, as of the end of January 2025, according to the Big Mac index for $ 1, would have to give UAH 20.73. While the official hryvnia exchange rate for Green then amounted to 41.93 hryvnias per dollar.
The cash exchange rate for the hryvnia in the banks of Ukraine on Friday, July 18, decreased by 15 cents and is 42.00 hryvnia per dollar. It is possible to sell US currency in banks today at an average rate of 41.50 hryvnia for a dollar.
