The 32-year-old actor took to Instagram on Thursday to post harrowing details of the incident along with graphic photos of his injury from the hospital including the gunshot wound, his bloodied arm, a long incision and series of stitches on his forearm. Though he doesn’t provide a location of the shooting, Horton did share that it happened a few days before the Christmas holiday.
“I wanna give an honor to God for covering me and protecting me to make it out this situation and countless other ones. Everybody that checked on me n holla’d at me specially my family n friends. I love y’all, thank you,” posted Horton, whose last professional acting credit came with a role on the Samuel L. Jackson-starrer The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey for Apple TV+. “Gettin shot a few days before X-mas def wasn’t on my wish list 😂🎅🏽 but it happened. [Mother fucker] shot thru the car at me bullet broke my arm shattered it all type o shit. But I’m Blessed dawg to not be in a casket or paralyzed Lord Thank You.”
Horton revealed that he’s out of the hospital and “healing” with a plate and screws in his arm. He cautions others to “stay alert” and grateful for everything. “The devil can’t stop shit when you walk with God,” he adds.
Jackson is among the many offering well wishes in Horton’s comment section, offering, “Glad you’re still with us, Tuff Stuff. Good thing you’re covered by the All mighty. Hoping you heal quickly & painlessly as possible.” Actor Keith Powers added, “Thank God you’re good bro. Speedy recovery.”
Horton had been amassing a long list of credits in Hollywood prior to his breakout role on Justin Simien’s Dear White People. He starred opposite Denzel Washington in Roman J. Israel, Esq., played Lou Carter on the series American Vandal, was a series regular on the 2019 installment of American Horror Story, and was seen in Bad Hair, Endless and Bliss.
He once sat down with The Hollywood Reporter for a Dear White People interview during which he talked about his work with Washington, whom he credited for altering the trajectory of his life. “I feel like he’s somewhat changed my life, saved my life. I will say that him and other people that I look up to very much and to see this person in the flesh and just know in my high school brain, I was like, ‘I just hope to be like him one day,’ and I’m sitting here looking at him.”
He added: “I want to stargaze, I want to ask him 2,000 questions but I also want to be as good as him right now and try and create this scene. So it was really tough but we got to talk about a lot of stuff. We talked about Shakespeare, we talked about God, we talked about love, making mistakes and stuff like that but it was a really, really humbling experience for me.”
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out directly to Horton for additional comment on the shooting.
