Cult of Trump: The Atlantic explained why showy renamings won’t go down in history

Trump's penchant for renaming may be revised in the future / photo ua.depositphotos.comRenaming objects in honor of Trump may be revised in the future / photo ua.depositphotos.comThe administration of the US president and his team initiate and approve the showy, but legally dubious, renaming of institutions and objects in honor of Donald Trump. However, the author of The Atlantic magazine Eliot Cohen considers such initiatives to be infantile decisions that will inevitably be canceled with the arrival of another government.

He writes that the Board of Trustees (the author also calls this body the “Council of Sneakers”) of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts renamed the Center in honor of Trump.

“Trump’s desire for flattery seems as insatiable as the supply of sycophants among his supporters – inexhaustible,” he wrote, recalling that Trump also approved the engraving of his name on the building of the US Institute of Peace and issued a cartographic decree that the Gulf of Mexico would henceforth be called the Gulf of America. And the head of the Pentagon Pete Hegseth renamed the Ministry of Defense to the “Ministry of War”. The author noted that the decision was illegal. Hegseth also renamed military bases that had once been named after Confederate generals, using stand-ins.

“All of this is offensive and bypasses the will of a weak and cowardly Congress. It’s also childish. The names will come back. In 10 years, the maps will say ‘Gulf of Mexico,’ and there’s a good chance that a Democratic administration will again rename the Department of Defense and Forts. Trump’s name will be carved from the walls, as will his embarrassing jokes about his predecessors in the “Walk of Fame” at the White House.” – the article says.

The author asks why Trump and his henchmen are doing things that are “childish in themselves and that anyone with political sense knows will be undone when their opponents eventually return to power?”. And then explains it by the fact that most of the leaders of the Trump administration, starting at the highest level, exhibit the behavior of children:

“And in many cases, broken kids who will never truly grow up and don’t understand what adult behavior is. Kids, especially teenagers who are most like the Trump leadership, rarely have a strong sense of the future. That’s one of the reasons they do stupid things so often.”

He noted that only truly mature people can realize that actions in the present time can be canceled in the future, that people do not control it: “Our ability to influence the world is limited – this is the feeling of adults.”

Instead, teenagers “often indulge in magical fantasies, dreaming of being able to manipulate a world that they deeply realize is beyond their control.”

“This desire to shape one’s environment helps to explain the fantastic belief in the power of names. To think that renaming an agency the ‘War Department’ can suddenly transform it is childish. Recognizing the messiness of reality, its inflexibility, and the limitations of our ability to deal with it is the prerogative of adults,” he wrote.

The author also noted that this may be a manifestation of inner anger:

“Trump is a master of offensive nicknames, which he uses not only to humiliate his opponents, but also because he likes to inflict pain. He revels in petty cruelty.”

He concludes that angry children can be unpleasant or even scary. But they are also miserable creatures. And he predicted that people who do not grow up will spend their lives hurting others and themselves. But, unfortunately, some of them can “become ministers or even the president of the United States of America.”

Trump’s attempts to stop the warWe will remind that the peace process was initiated by the President of the USA, during which the so-called “peace plan” is being discussed. According to historian Yaroslav Hrytsak, Trump is trying to drive Ukraine and Russia into a “narrow corridor” to find compromises. However, he says, the real search for peace is hindered by Trump’s naivety and his unwillingness to apply strong solutions to Russia.
