The publication in particular notes that Trump’s decision may be an attempt to put pressure on India to conclude a trade agreement with the United States, which the US President has insisted on from early April. At the same time, if high tariffs for the import of Indian goods to the US, it will encourage business to choose other Asian countries for production operations, weakening India’s position as China’s leading alternative.

The authors of the publication point out that the warming of the connections between Washington and New Delhi has lasted over the last two decades, as the United States has seen in India in contrast to China. The Indian leadership was hopeful that the relationship between Prime Minister Nari Modi and Mr. Trump, who developed during the first US Presidential Administration, would only improve.
