Initial 999 calls came in reporting smoke in the area near Walsall.

Ten West Midlands Fire Service engines were then scrambled to the Bloxwich food factory at around 7.20pm.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “We were called at 7.20pm to reports of smoke in the area.

“Once we confirmed a fire was in progress 7 appliances were sent which were quickly increased to ten.

“We have other vehicles on site including our Command Control Centre and two Hydraulic Platforms.

“Approximately 50 firefighters and personnel are on scene and we are trying to stop the spread of the fire and contain it to the one building.”

Workers from the factory have been evacuated while emergency crews deal with the fire.

It is understood that no one has been injured in the blaze.

Last month, a major incident was declared after a fire erupted at a firework warehouse.

Around 25 fire engines and 150 firefighters were scrambled to the inferno in Southall, West London – with schools and homes evacuated.

The blaze broke out at a two storey building containing a warehouse and retail space at Middlesex Business Park.

Around three-quarters of the building was alight and a nearby school and block of flats were evacuated as a safety precaution.
