Miley Cyrus, who rose to superstar status first as an actress and then as a singer, is open (eager, even) to return to the screen. “Love to,” she said The Hollywood Reporter of acting again while standing on the red carpet Saturday outside the Palm Springs Convention Center where she picked up a trophy for her Avatar: Fire and Ash ballad “Dream as One.” “I hope some brilliant mind in here has the right thing for me. Let’s see. Remind them. If someone genius comes by, be like, ‘Hey, Miley is here.'”
Asked what specifically she’d like to do, Cyrus came quickly with an answer: “Just tell them, ‘What do they want me to do.’ I would love to go into someone else’s world. I’m the boss in my own world.”
Aside from a surprise cameo in Ethan Coen’s 2024 film Drive-Away Dollsit’s been years since Cyrus took on a meaty role in film or TV. She played pop star Ashley O in Black Mirror in 2019, and before that her other most recent credits include Woody Allen’s 2016 series Crisis in Six Scenes; the 2012 films So Undercover and LOL; and 2010’s The Last Songamong others. She’s got other projects on the horizon including “something really, really special” to mark the 20th anniversary in March of Hannah Montana.
“I think of my life in quarters, so I like to kind of think about who and what I want to be or do within the first quarter of that year and don’t think too far ahead or you end up committing to all these things that maybe that’s not what is planned for you ultimately,” she told THR of her plans for this year. “So within my first quarter, it’s just celebration and kind of tying up what I’ve started with Avatar. We were just talking about the Hannah Montana anniversary, just really about everything that has happened, really taking time to honor that. Then I’m thinking in the back half of the year, what could be.”
Something that she said she plans to do ASAP, however, is catch up to the phenomenon that is Heated Rivalry. “Every conversation I’ve had today has started with this [show]. I have not watched yet, but I will, and I’m aware of how much I’m going to be obsessed.”
Speaking of obsessed, Avatar continues to be a box office juggernaut. The third installment in James Cameron’s epic franchise recently crossed the $1 billion mark with no signs of slowing down. Cyrus has seen the film in theaters and joked that she’s even got her style strategy secured for how best to enjoy the extended experience.
“It’s a long film so you got to be properly dressed and designed. You want to look hot going in and leaving the theater but I don’t want to look hot for three and a half hours so I pack all my little cozy things and I sneak all the food in.”
On a more serious note, Cyrus also offered her words of wisdom regarding this week’s somber one-year anniversary since the catastrophic LA wildfires as someone with experience: Cyrus lost a home in the 2018 Malibu wildfire.
“I love how resilient our city is and watching everyone rebuild. We saw the community come together last year with everyone pulling together to pull through. It’s nice now to see everybody with their feet on the ground a bit more. You just get so unstabilized and I don’t think in a year you really can be grounded again. [I’m hoping for] a lot of peace for the families that aren’t going to feel rebuilt for a long time.”
