In her study, a team of scientists said that the source of this “space eye” is a blazar called PKS 1424+240. It is located billions of light years from Earth.
The publication reminded that one of the main features of the blags is that their energy jets are almost perfectly aligned with respect to the Earth. Their radiation falls on our planet at right angles, causing them to seem much brighter than most quasars.
Researchers looked into one of the “jet cones” PKS 1424+240 using radio waves, which enabled them to visualize magnetic fields within the energy beam. They made the first clear image of a blazar thanks to the combination of data collected over 15 years by the National Radiostronomic Observatory of Very Long Baseline Array.

We never saw anything like this – an almost perfect toroidal magnetic field with a stream directed directly at us,” – said the leading author of the study, Yuri Kovalev, Astrone from Max Planck’s Radiostronomy Institute in Bonn, Germany.
The publication noted that this image became possible only due to the almost perfect coincidence of the jet with the ground. This enhances its high energy radiation due to the effects of special theory of relativity.
Scientists emphasized that PKS 1424+240 is the most striking of all the detected blazar ones that emit neutrino (also known as “ghost particles”). He for a long time puzzled astronomers.
Researchers believe that the magnetic field of Blazar accelerates protons to such high speeds that they turn into neutrino. Now additional observations of such jets will be required to reveal the mechanism of this phenomenon.
