Angela Bassett has proven that two things can be true at once after revealing the details behind that 2023 Oscars ceremony.

The American actress, 66, went viral two years ago after being caught looking extremely disappointed when she lost out to Jamie Lee Curtis in the best supporting actress category.

Now, she’s reflecting on the moment and admitted that while she ‘loves applauding people’, that was one time she couldn’t. Instead, she was in shock because she believed it was ‘a given’ that she would win.

Angela, who was nominated for her role in Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, received widespread industry recognition for her performance, with a total of 16 award nominations, including a Bafta, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award.

While she won eight of those awards, Jamie’s Everything Everywhere All At Once performance won the Oscar. Soon after, Angela told Oprah Winfrey that she was ‘gobsmacked’ by not only the loss but also the commentary that followed.

Doubling down on her comments in a recent interview with Town & Country, she says she found the entire situation ‘interesting’.

The Black Panther actress believed she put in enough time and work to receive the win (Picture: ABC / BACKGRID) ‘Interesting that I wouldn’t be allowed to be disappointed at an outcome where I thought I was deserving,’ she told the publication.

‘I love applauding people. But in that moment…’ She said as she explained on how she believed she had put in the appropriate amount of work to be honoured.

The news outlet noted she then corrected herself: ‘No, I have put in: put in the time, put in good work over time. I didn’t think that was a gift. I thought it was a given.’

Angela’s friend, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, echoed her pal’s feelings to the news outlet and said that she deserved to win.

‘That’s a tough one, because she’s really respected among her peers, and maybe the establishment has not done [right by her],’ she said.

At the time, Angela received a mixed reaction from fans for how she handled the situation, some believed she should have shown grace and clapped for her peer, while others were more shocked than her that she missed out.

‘Jamie Lee Curtis’ performance was better than Bassetts IMO. It was more nuanced and interesting. Bassette’s performance was powerful but felt like the same one-note “rage grief” throughout. JLC deserved that Oscar,’ @VikingMarie wrote.

While @Drako1909 defended the actress: ‘I love Jamie Lee, but Angela Bassett’s performance in the movie was so top and so perfect, it made me feel so much because it was raw and powerful. Angela Bassett is a perfect actress that isn’t celebrated enough.’

‘Angela Bassett deserved better than to lose the Oscar to Jamie Lee Curtis,’ @comicaccuracy added.

The decorated actress’s comments come just weeks before the 2025 Academy Awards (Picture: Photographer: Ruven Afanador) Following the tense criticism, the Academy awarded Angela an honorary Oscar in 2024, recognising her contributions to the film industry.

During her speech, she told the crowd that the award wasn’t just about her: ‘What I hope this moment means is that we are taking the necessary steps toward a future in which it is the norm, not the exception, to see and embrace one another’s full humanity, stories and perspectives.’

‘This must be our goal, and to always remember that there is room for us all. When we stand together, we win together.’

Angela has had an impressive and lengthy career since entering the industry in the 1980s. However, it wasn’t until 1993 that she had her first major career breakthrough, portraying Tina Turner in the biopic What’s Love Got to Do with It.

The performance won her a Golden Globe and earned her an Academy Award nomination for best actress.

Throughout her career, she has earned praise for her roles across film and TV, particularly in How Stella Got Her Groove Back, The Rosa Parks Story and Black Panther.
