Ukraine may receive the first tranche of the EU's 90 billion euro loan in April

The European Union plans to transfer the first tranche of financial aid to Ukraine within the framework of a new loan package for 2026-2027 as early as the beginning of the second quarter. This was announced by European Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis following negotiations with Ukrainian government officials on the preparation of the necessary regulatory framework, UNN writes.

DetailsDombrovskis confirmed that active work is currently underway to approve a support package of 90 billion euros, which is designed for the next two years. According to the European Commission’s plan, two-thirds of the amount (60 billion euros) will be directed to military needs, and the rest (30 billion euros) – to direct budget support in exchange for reforms.

Terms and mechanism of paymentsThe loan is based on the principle of joint borrowing by 24 EU member states (without the participation of Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic). An important condition is that Ukraine will only have to repay the loan after Russia pays reparations. For successful receipt of funds in April, the legislative process in Brussels must be completed by early March, which will allow closing the financial gap in Ukraine’s budget for the current year.
