Austrian human rights organization Noyb has filed a complaint against TikTok, Shein, Xiaomi and three other Chinese companies, accusing them of illegally transferring EU user data to China. Meanwhile, Temu and the Tencent-owned WeChat messenger are transmitting data to unspecified “third countries,” presumably China. A representative of Xiaomi said that the company is analyzing the allegations and is ready to cooperate with regulators in the event of an appeal. Other companies have not yet commented.Advertisement: According to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the transfer of data outside the EU is only permitted if the receiving country guarantees an adequate level of data protection. We will remind: Chinese officials are considering an option by which Elon Musk can buy the American operations of TikTok, if the company does not manage to avoid a controversial ban on the application. The US is considering banning TikTok if its parent company ByteDance does not sell the platform. Meanwhile, Americans, fearing the ban, are actively switching to another Chinese application — RedNote.
