The influx of military migrants increased Polish GDP by 0.7-1.1%.
According to him, already after a year and a half of stay in Poland, the majority of Ukrainian refugees supported themselves. It is about both employees and entrepreneurs. At the same time, 80% of military migrants had jobs in Poland or worked remotely in Ukraine.
“The degree of economic integration was very fast. This was facilitated by the fact that the average refugee who came to Poland was highly qualified, in particular, compared to the previous wave of migration. But at the beginning, they were forced to work in positions lower than their qualification level.” – noted the expert.
He also refuted the myth that refugees from Ukraine cost the Polish economy dearly. Thus, according to Eurostat, at the end of September 2024, there were almost 980,000 Ukrainian refugees in Poland. At the same time, the taxes paid by migrants exceed the initial assistance they received from the state, Lashek says:
“We estimated that the influx of war migrants increased Polish GDP by 0.7-1.1%. This influx of refugees helped the Polish economy. … If we talk about refugees globally, then the Polish economy, Polish businesses definitely benefited from their appearance on the Polish market taxpayers and Polish entrepreneurs”.
Also, according to the publication, the information that Ukrainians are taking jobs from Poles has not been confirmed. In particular, the Union of Ukrainian Entrepreneurs says that Poland is the country with the lowest unemployment in Europe. Thus, according to the data of the Main Directorate of State Statistics, at the end of August 2024, the unemployment rate was 5%, employment centers have requests for almost 80,000 vacancies.
