Poland, the largest importer of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), will cut purchases by about 80% this year due to Western sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine. This was reported by the Polish Association of Professional Engineers (POGP), writes Reuters. According to POGP, imports from Russia will decrease to about 20,000 tons per month compared to an average of 100,000 tons per month in 2024. This was a consequence of the introduction of EU sanctions on the Russian ZVG from December 20. Sanctions do not apply to certain types of LPG, such as butane and isobutane, which are mainly used as raw materials for the production of other petrochemical products. Other types of LPG are mostly used as fuel for cars and heating.Advertisement: To make up for the shortfall, Poland will increase its imports of LPG through ports and vehicles from countries such as Germany and the Netherlands, the POGP said. According to LSEG, in 2024, Poland has already increased its seaborne imports of liquefied petroleum gas by 5% to 1.14 million tonnes, assuming sanctions. Shipments from the US and UK also increased significantly, while seaborne imports from Sweden declined.
