New US sanctions against Moscow could block the only way for European customers to pay for Russian gas, increase volatility in the Russian currency market and push Moscow closer to Beijing’s orbit.

About this informs Reuters.

Washington on Thursday introduced new sanctions against Russia’s Gazprombank, which prohibit the state-controlled bank from making any new energy-related transactions affecting the US financial system.

Hungary and Slovakia, which have long-term contracts with Russian energy giant Gazprom, are studying the changes. Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavlo Sorokin declined to comment when asked whether Gazprombank would continue to accept payments from European customers.

“The EU’s payments for energy resources through Gazprombank will most likely become impossible at the end of 2024,” analysts of the investment bank “Sinara” believe.

The sanctions include a period of curtailment of transactions involving Gazprombank until December 20 and transactions related to the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project in the Russian Far East until June 28, 2025.

We will remind:

“Gazprombank” warned customers that due to US sanctions imposed on the company, there may be problems in the operation of cards of the UnionPay payment system abroad.
