A contractor hired by Meta ignored threats to content moderators from Ethiopian rebels outraged by their work. This was reported by Reuters with reference to relevant documents. Last year, 185 content moderators sued Meta and two contractors, saying they lost their jobs at Sama, a Kenyan firm contracted to moderate Facebook content, for trying to organize a union. After Facebook switched contractors, they said, they were blacklisted and unable to apply for the same positions at another firm, Majorel. Moderators based in Ethiopia said members of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) rebel group were targeted for the removal of their videos, but their complaints were dismissed by Sama, according to court documents filed Dec. 4 by British nonprofit Foxglove, which supports the cause of these moderators. The moderators said in the petition that Sama accused them of “creating a fake account and manufacturing” threatening messages, then agreed to an investigation and sent one of the moderators, who was publicly identified by the rebels, to the conspiratorial apartment. One of the moderators said in his testimony that he received a message from the OLA with threats against “content moderators who constantly deleted their graphic posts on Facebook.” “They told us to stop removing their content from Facebook or we will face dire consequences,” he said, adding that his supervisor dismissed his concerns.
