The U.S. has increased sales of liquefied natural gas to China this year, although the surge may be short-lived if the new Trump administration clashes with Beijing on trade issues.
About this informs Bloomberg with reference to data from Chinese customs.
China imported 63% more supercooled fuel from the US in the first 10 months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. That put the US in fifth place on Beijing’s list of suppliers, after Australia, Qatar, Russia and Malaysia.
While the 3.9 million tons shipped this year represent only about 6% of total shipments to China, Chinese buyers have signed contracts for 14 million tons of U.S. LNG starting in 2026.
If Washington insists on imposing 60% tariffs on Chinese goods, Beijing may retaliate with tariffs on American gas. This is exactly what happened during the last trade war, when Trump was in power, which caused US gas exports to China to come to an almost complete halt for most of 2019.
We will remind:
The United States can to introduce a nearly 40% tariff on imports from China early next year when Donald Trump’s presidency begins.
