The US is considering banning TikTok if its parent company ByteDance does not sell the platform. Meanwhile, Americans, fearing the ban, are actively switching to another Chinese application — RedNote. The BBC writes about it. RedNote is an application that combines the functions of Instagram and TikTok, allowing you to view photos, videos and use the marketplace. On January 14, it became the most downloaded app in the US App Store, and it has already been downloaded more than 10 million times in Google Play. RedNote has more than 60,000 posts with the hashtag “TikTok refugee,” teaching newbies to navigate the app and use basic Chinese phrases. The application belongs to the Chinese company Xingyin Information Technology. In 2022, it was banned from being downloaded to the work devices of government employees in Taiwan. According to the Guardian, Taiwanese politicians fear that some posts in RedNote are trying to question Taiwan’s national and cultural identity. In China, RedNote is known as Xiaohongshu, which translates as “Little Red Book”. The collection of Mao Zedong’s quotes published by the Chinese government in 1966 had the same name. At the same time, the developers deny any connection between the name of the application and this book. We will remind: Chinese officials are considering an option by which Elon Musk can buy the American operations of TikTok, if the company does not manage to avoid a controversial ban on the application.
