China buys shares of Rosatom in uranium projects in Kazakhstan

The Chinese company State Nuclear Uranium Resources Development bought the share of the Russian state corporation “Rosatom” in one of the uranium projects on the territory of Kazakhstan. This was reported by the Kazakh state company “Kazatomprom”, which is the world’s largest producer of uranium. The company Uranium One Group, which is part of Rosatom, has sold its share – 49.979% – in JV “Zarichne” SNURDC Astana Mining Company Limited, the ultimate beneficiary of which is a Chinese company. Kazatomprom’s share in the joint venture did not change. JV “Zarichne” mines uranium at the Zarichne deposit in the Turkestan region. The deposit was opened in 1977, its reserves at the beginning of 2024 amounted to about 3,500 tons of uranium. The development of the field is planned to be completed in 2028.Advertisement: According to Kazatomprom, Uranium One Group also plans to sell shares in two more companies. It is expected that it will come out of JV “Khorasan-U” and LLP “Kyzylkum”. In each of these projects, the Russian side owns 30%. The buyer will be China Uranium Development Company Limited, the ultimate beneficiary of which is China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN, KPR). Kazatomprom’s share will not change and will be 50% in both joint ventures. Advertisement: Khorasan-U mines uranium at the Kharasan-1 site of the Northern Kharasan deposit in the Zhanakorgan District of the Kyzylorda Region. At the beginning of 2024, the reserves of the field amounted to about 33,000 tons of uranium with a development period until 2038. All extracted uranium is processed at the production facilities of Kyzylkum LLC. Uranium One mined 4,800 tons of uranium in Kazakhstan in 2023, which, together with the production of 2,700 tons in Russia, put Rosatom in third place in the world with a market share of 14%.
