Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton has emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, defeating Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. This victory positions Stratton as the likely candidate for the general election in November, given the Democratic-leaning nature of the state’s Senate seat.
Stratton’s campaign received significant support from Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, while Krishnamoorthi garnered nearly $10 million in funding from the crypto-focused super PAC Fairshake. The PAC’s strategy primarily involved attacking Stratton through advertisements rather than directly promoting Krishnamoorthi, a tactic reminiscent of their approach in previous elections.
The Cook Political Report categorizes Illinois’ Senate seat as “Solid Democratic,” indicating a strong likelihood that the primary winner will succeed in the general election and represent Illinois in the Senate starting in 2027.
Fairshake’s involvement in the primary has drawn attention, particularly due to its ratings of candidates based on their stance towards cryptocurrency. Stratton received an “F” rating from Stand With Crypto, a group that evaluates lawmakers’ crypto-friendliness, mainly due to a comment she made about Krishnamoorthi’s support from “MAGA-backed crypto bros.” In contrast, Krishnamoorthi received an “A” rating based on his voting record and responses to the group’s questionnaire.
In addition to Stratton’s win, Fairshake faced challenges in other races. La Shawn Ford, a candidate opposed by the PAC, won his primary for Illinois’ 7th District House seat, despite Fairshake spending nearly $2 million against him. Ford’s campaign has accused Fairshake of running defamatory ads, a claim that has not yet been addressed by the PAC.
Despite setbacks in some races, Fairshake celebrated victories for three candidates it supported: Donna Miller in the 2nd House District, Melissa Bean in the 8th House District, and Nikki Budzinski in the 13th House District. Fairshake’s expenditures in these races included approximately $800,000 against Roger Peters in the IL-2 race, around $560,000 to support Bean in the IL-8 race, and under $84,000 for Budzinski in the IL-13 race.
Geoff Vetter, a spokesperson for Fairshake, expressed congratulations to the winning candidates, emphasizing the PAC’s commitment to supporting pro-crypto leaders. He stated, “Tonight, Illinois voters have elected more pro-crypto members of Congress, and we are just getting started in our nationwide fight for American innovation.” Vetter did not provide comments regarding the Senate or 7th District races, nor on Ford’s allegations.
