A recent analysis indicates that Bitcoin has consistently outperformed traditional safe haven assets, such as gold and the S&P 500, in the aftermath of significant economic and geopolitical events. Conducted by Mercado Bitcoin, a Brazilian cryptocurrency exchange, the study examined 60-day periods following various global crises, revealing Bitcoin’s resilience and strong return potential.
The research, led by Rony Szuster, the head of research at Mercado Bitcoin, highlighted that Bitcoin’s performance surpassed that of gold and the S&P 500 during critical events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and U.S. tariff escalations. For instance, after the Trump administration’s announcement of extensive tariffs in April 2022, Bitcoin’s value surged by 24% over the subsequent two months, while gold and the S&P 500 increased by only 8% and 4%, respectively.
A similar trend was observed at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, when Bitcoin rose by 21%, again outpacing the other assets. Szuster cautioned, however, that evaluating Bitcoin’s performance immediately after a crisis can yield misleading conclusions. He remarked, “It’s like watching the first few minutes of a movie and thinking you already know how it ends.” This is due to the initial market reactions where investors often liquidate positions to manage risk, causing even traditionally stable assets to decline.
Despite these fluctuations, Bitcoin has shown a consistent recovery pattern. The ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict appears to be following this trend, with Bitcoin being the only asset among the three analyzed that has registered gains. Since the conflict’s escalation, Bitcoin’s value increased by over 2.2%, rising from approximately $65,800 to $67,300. In contrast, gold has experienced an 11% decline, while the S&P 500 has fallen by 4.4%, marking its steepest monthly drop since 2022.
Szuster noted that, despite Bitcoin’s inherent volatility, it has emerged as the best-performing asset over the past decade, underscoring its potential as a viable investment option during times of economic uncertainty.
