The head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak urged Europe to stop “moan” and block the Russian “shadow fleet” in the Baltic Sea.
– In January 25, the US sanctions closed a lot of oil tankers of the shadow fleet from the Pacific ports of Russia. Time for Europe to activate and close the shadow fleet in the Baltic. You don’t need the US. Stop moaning and do it, ”he wrote in X (former Twitter).
Yermak’s message is a comment on Guardian article The US was vetoed on Canada’s proposal in G7 to fight the shadow fleet of Russian oil tankers. The United States insists on removing the mention of the sanctions and war of Russia in Ukraine from the statement.
In his telegram channel, Ermak has published a softer version of the call to Europe.
– The US sanctions in January 2025 stopped many of the Tanker Fleet. These tankers came from Russian Pacific ports. It’s time for Europe to take the initiative and block the Tanker Navy in the Baltic Sea, – it said.
According to the Guardian material, the United States also rejected the proposal to create a special group that would fight the so -called “shadow fleet” of Russian oil tankers. Canada, which is currently presiding in the Big Seven, offered this event before the meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Quebec this week.
The shadow fleet is an outdated oil tanker that Russia uses to bypass Western economic sanctions imposed after it has started a full -scale military invasion of Ukraine.
Currently, European countries are discussing plans that will allow them to make it impossible for Russian tankers to export oil in the Baltic Sea. Proposals include the use of international law to allow the vessel control for environmental or pirate reasons.
According to international investigation, European and American shipowners have sold at least 230 outdated shadow fleet tankers used by Russia to avoid Western sanctions for oil export.
Western governments say that the shadow fleet ships are used for the transportation of Russian oil, espionage in favor of Moscow and mapping, and sometimes destroying a vital submarine infrastructure such as cables.
The team that worked with the Kiev School of Economics (KSE), whose researchers believe that the shadow fleet is transporting about 70% of all exports of Russian oil, analyzed hundreds of sea cargoes and records of ship registration.
Some tankers are forbidden to enter the EU ports if they are revealed that they carry Russian oil or participate in the “dangerous practice of navigation”. About 70 have come under EU sanctions, according to reports, 74 restrictions will be applied.
However, there are no reports on plans to introduce specific measures that prohibit the sale of vessels with a shadow fleet, partly through resistance to Member States with important navigation sectors such as Greece, Cyprus and Malta.
US Sanctions in Jan ’25 Shut Down Many Shadow Fleet Oil Tankers Out of Russia’s Pacific Ports. Time for Europe to Step Up and Shut Down of the Shadow Fleet in the Baltic. You don’t need the US for that. STOP MOANING AND DO IT. https://t.co/zvln65oaek
