As a result of the powerful attacks of the Russian Federation on the energy structure, part of the distribution networks was damaged. In this regard, certain consumers are without power supply — they use emergency shutdowns. At the same time, there may be buildings nearby that are connected to energy nodes that are functioning. That is, even a building on the same street can have power from another power line that is intact. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy on October 16.
It is important to know:
- Objects of critical infrastructure (hospitals, water canals, military facilities, etc.) are not turned off.
- If residential buildings are connected to the line supplying such objects, they will also have electricity supply.
- Schedules of hourly shutdowns and the list of important objects are approved by the regional military administration (OVA), and the list of critical infrastructure is determined by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
- Power engineers work around the clock to localize the damage, perform back-up switching and restore power supply in the shortest possible time. In order to ensure the prompt change of queues, in the conditions of power system restrictions, power companies carry out shutdowns at the level of substations and distribution points.
“We are aware of the difficulties caused by the shelling from the Russians, and we express our gratitude for patience and support. Each of us is bringing the restoration of the energy system closer – with the support of energy workers and our own resilience,” the Ministry of Energy emphasized.
How long will the blackouts last? Emergency power outages in Ukraine may continue for another week. It may take longer in some regions. On October 16, the head of “Ukrenergo” Vitaly Zaichenko reported on this.
“Given the current situation, it will be possible to stabilize it in a week,” Zaichenko said.
At the same time, he clarified that during this period, emergency shutdowns during peak periods of consumption may occur in certain regions.
Turning off the light We will remind you that on October 16 in Ukraine, a difficult situation in the power system caused an emergency power outage. Emergency shutdowns are used in many areas. The reason for the introduction of restrictions is the consequences of previous Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
In July, the National Bank of Ukraine stated that due to operational repairs, the shortage of electricity in Ukraine will be smaller than previously predicted. The National Bank of Ukraine reduced the estimate of the electricity deficit to 1% in 2025. In April, the forecast was three times worse – the deficit was then estimated at 3%.
According to the updated forecast of the National Bank, in 2026 the deficit of electricity, taking into account imports, will remain at the level of 1%. And in 2027, there will be no need to import electricity at all. Such small amounts of deficit will practically not affect the rate of economic growth. In addition, reducing the need for emergency power sources will reduce business costs and inflationary pressures.
