Not every Ukrainian can afford to pay for the services of the funeral bureau and other relevant institutions. And if the dilemma about whether it is a sin not to go to a funeral can arise situationally, then you will have to escort a person to the afterlife anyway.

Find out what funeral payments are available and who can receive them.

Who has the right to issue funeral paymentsAccording to the PFU website, social benefits for funerals are available only to people with insurance or to those whom such people financially supported (maintained). These belong to the following categories of kinship:

  • husband (wife);
  • children, brothers, sisters and grandchildren under the age of 18;
  • children, brothers, sisters or grandchildren older than 18 years, if they have a disability acquired before reaching adulthood (in addition, this rule applies to brothers, sisters and grandchildren if they do not have working parents);
  • children, brothers, sisters or grandchildren under the age of 23 who are studying in vocational schools, technical schools and universities on a full-time basis;
  • father, mother;
  • grandfather, grandmother in a direct line.

This procedure is described in Article 20 of the Law of Ukraine “On Mandatory State Social Insurance”.

Its logic is simple – if one of the family members constantly financially supported a person, his funds were the only source of income, then after the death of this person, the aforementioned family member has the right to issue funeral payments.

It is important to understand that if a person had another source of income (pension or work), then he is not considered a dependent.

How much will be paid for a pensioner’s funeral and what documents are requiredFrom January 1, 2023, funeral payments in Ukraine for insured persons or persons who were dependent on insured persons are 4100 hryvnias. The amount is fixed and, according to the Law of Ukraine “On Mandatory State Pension Insurance”, cannot be less than the amount equal to two pensions that a person received during his lifetime.

In order to issue funeral payments to the relatives of the deceased or to the persons who performed the funeral, certain documents must be submitted to the Pension Fund, such as:

  • passport of a citizen of Ukraine;
  • identification code;
  • a handwritten statement at the time of admission to PFU;
  • a person’s death certificate;
  • death extract from the State Register or death certificate;
  • details of the bank account to which the money will be deposited.

It is worth noting that Ukraine does not clearly define the terms of payment of burial benefits – it can be done at any convenient time. But remember that the decision to grant benefits will be made by the insurer the day after your application. If it turns out to be positive, you will be transferred funds for the specified details.

What will be the payments for the burial of a military pensionerPayments for the burial of military personnel are slightly larger than the allowance for the burial of civilians. Their amount is regulated by the Law of Ukraine “On pension provision of persons released from military service and certain other persons”. According to it, the amount of financial assistance should be at least equal to three monthly pensions, but definitely not less than the living wage for people who have the opportunity to work, multiplied by 5.

From January 1, 2024, the subsistence minimum for able-bodied persons is 3,028 hryvnias. Thus, it turns out that persons who applied for financial assistance in the burial of a military pensioner can receive it 15140 hryvnias.

This rule applies to absolutely all citizens of Ukraine who were military personnel and retired, except for those who were buried at the expense of the state.

In order to make the application correctly, not to confuse or forget the necessary documents, and then to receive funeral payments from the state on time and in full, it is better to make an appointment at one of the PFU service centers.
