A new traffic signal design has been implemented in Ukraine, aimed at enhancing road safety. The updated signal now features a bright red circle that illuminates when a right turn is prohibited, in addition to the familiar green arrow indicating when the maneuver is allowed.
Previously, drivers might overlook the absence of a light, especially under fatigue or adverse weather conditions, leading to potential violations. The introduction of the red circle serves as a clear indicator of the prohibition, thereby aiding drivers in navigating complex intersections.
According to the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA), these modern traffic signals will be gradually installed throughout the capital, replacing older models that have reached the end of their operational lifespan. The first of these new signals is already operational at St. Michael’s Square, directing traffic towards Mykhailivska Street.
This upgrade is part of Ukraine’s broader initiative to adopt updated road safety standards, aligning with DSTU 4092:2024. The goal is to reduce traffic accidents, particularly at challenging locations.
Such enhancements are particularly crucial for:
- Intersections with poor visibility;
- Areas with high traffic volumes;
- Locations where drivers frequently ignore prohibitory signals.
By implementing these changes, authorities aim to create a safer driving environment and minimize the risk of accidents in critical areas.
