Trump, known for his impatience, in the question of the end of the war in Ukraine is betting on his reputation of a person who can negotiate.
The Times writes about it. The publication notes that the history of frozen conflicts is not happy – the threat of renewal of armed confrontation is always relevant.
Ukraine should be lucky, says Professor of Strategic Studies at the University of St. Endrus Phillips O’Brien. Trump, known for his impatience, in the question of the end of the war in Ukraine is betting on his reputation of a person who can negotiate.
“Trump is actually no business to Ukraine. He wants to get a loan of trust for the termination of hostilities, to declare himself a peacemaker and return home,” he explained.
According to Obrien, Trump threats against Russia are not convincing. He added that the US president did not offer any security guarantees for Ukraine and positions himself as a mediator, not a guarantor.
Frozen conflict and peacekeepersThe most famous example of a frozen conflict of the present is the Korean War. The Korean Peninsula was divided by the front line. North and South Korea is still in a state of war in the absence of a peace treaty. External events and forces were crucial for this truce. But thousands of foreign troops also participated in the Korean War under the UN flag, which remained to ensure a ceasefire regime until they were completely replaced by US forces.
Trump has already made it clear that if a truce in Ukraine will require the presence of peacekeepers, Europe should deal with this issue, not the US or even NATO.
The authors of the material note that European leaders are beginning to realize that Trump’s presidency can mean for Ukraine. The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Lien spoke of the danger of sudden ceasefire at the forum in Davos:
No one wants peace more than the people of Ukraine. But they want a fair and long peace. What they do not want is a frozen conflict that can break again a little later. ”
Ukrainians are very familiar with such a scenario. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke about it, because for several years “we had a frozen conflict in eastern Ukraine”, and the Minsk agreements did not resolve it.
“We tried to talk to Russia. But we did not hear anything but lies. No truth. We cannot trust them,” Zelensky said.
Completion of the Russian Federation against UkraineThe People’s Deputy, a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence Fedor Venislavsky stated that there is no reason to hope that the war would end in the near future. At the same time, he says that there is reason to hope that the war will be able to complete “within a long period of time.”
Earlier, the Independent has been pied that a peace agreement on war in Ukraine may be unattainable. It is noted that preliminary arrangements for termination of hostilities in 2014 and 2015, after the first invasion of Russia into Ukraine, failed, as many other attempts.
