As Reuters notes, Trump demanded that other members of the transatlantic alliance spend 5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defense. This is a huge increase from the current target of 2% and a level not currently achieved by any NATO country, including the US.

“I’m not sure we should be spending anything, but we certainly should be helping them. We’re protecting them. They’re not protecting us,” Trump told reporters after signing the executive order in the Oval Office.

He also repeated his remarks earlier at the World Economic Forum in Davos that “they should increase their 2% to 5%”.

Trump’s demands on NATO countriesDonald Trump spoke about the withdrawal of the United States from NATO. In Europe, they are worried that Trump will withdraw the USA from NATO and destroy the Alliance. However, there are also opinions that Trump is simply bluffing, seeking to force Europeans to invest more in their own defense.

Earlier, Lithuania became the first country in Europe to agree to increase defense spending following the demands of newly elected US President Donald Trump.
