According to Corriere della Sera, at the moment, the head of state Volodymyr Zelenskyi is forced to make a decisive decision for Ukraine and its future. On the one hand – security guarantees from the USA and other attractive agreements for the restoration of the state, and on the other – extremely onerous concessions regarding the Donetsk region.

Main theses:

  • Trump is putting pressure on Zelensky, seeking to quickly end the war.
  • However, for Ukraine, some of his proposals are very burdensome and risky.

Trump is trying to lead Zelenskyi to a dead end At the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Ukrainian leader officially assured that Kyiv and Washington are working together on peace agreements.

Moreover, he said that the negotiation groups are “at the final stage”.

According to the latest data, at least 4 documents are under consideration in the negotiations:

  • common “signature” basic document;
  • three important agreements, among which the most controversial one is regarding the Donetsk region.

Putin’s team is actively seeking for Ukraine to hand over to Russia a part of the Donetsk region that it cannot seize on its own – it is about 20% of the region.

As long as the Kremlin does not demand from Kyiv an official recognition of the sovereignty of the Russian Federation over this territory, it does not make it any easier for Ukraine.

In the Office of the President of Ukraine, everyone is perfectly aware that the loss of the Donetsk fortifications will open the way for Russia to the Dnipro, and then to Odesa.

This will mean the loss of access to the Black Sea and the critical dependence of Ukrainian exports on Moscow.

That is why at the moment Volodymyr Zelenskyi was faced with the most difficult choice since the beginning of the war.
