Nataliya Boyko, deputy head of the Supervisory Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine, warned of a significant rise in gas consumption in the state (on 20% from the beginning of the week) and called for his savings. She announced this on October 16 at the Kyiv International Economic Forum.

Boyko noted that as a result of the cold weather, Ukrainians began to heat their homes with gas much more intensively, compared to the same time last year, which creates additional pressure on an already damaged system.

“If we use something now, we might be taking something away in February,” she warned.

The circumstances are complicated by the fact that this night, for the sixth time in the past two weeks, Russia has attacked gas production facilities in Ukraine. As a result of shelling by a large number of drones and dozens of missiles, important objects in the Poltava and Kharkiv regions were damaged. Four Naftogaz employees were injured. Boyko believes that Ukrainians should reconsider their everyday habits.

“Everyone can put on another sweater at home. I very strongly recommend everyone to save energy resources: electricity, gas, heat – and not to overheat where you do not need it,” she said.

For its part, Naftogaz focused on two key tasks – restoring the damaged infrastructure and attracting additional funding. By the beginning of October, the company had accumulated about $2.5 billion for the purchase of gas, half of which was its own funds, the other part was credit and grant support from partners.

For the first time, according to Boyko, Ukraine received credit support without a sovereign guarantee from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank. The representative of the company emphasized that the recovery is complicated by the features of the equipment. Large compressor equipment is not stocked in large quantities and needs to be made to order, taking months, not weeks.

We will remind that on October 3, Russia carried out the largest attack on gas production infrastructure since the beginning of the war. According to Bloomberg, this disabled 60% of Ukraine’s gas production, which led to the need for additional imports of the resource during the heating season. The interlocutors of the publication estimate the additional need for 4.4 billion cubic meters of gas by the end of March – this almost corresponds to the volumes that Ukraine purchased during the off-season.
