Azerbaijan demands punishment for those responsible for the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plane, which crashed near the Kazakh city of Aktau on a flight from Baku to Grozny. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said this at a meeting with family members of crew members and flight attendants who survived the plane crash, writes Azerbaijan State News Agency “Azertaj”.
– I can say with confidence that the responsibility for the death of Azerbaijani citizens in this disaster (the plane crash in Aktau) lies with the representatives of the Russian Federation. And we demand justice, we demand punishment of the guilty, we demand full transparency and humane behavior, – said Aliyev.
The head of state added that the process of deciphering the black boxes is currently underway.
– I am sure that in the near future we will learn about the preliminary result, and everything will fall into place, the whole picture of this tragedy will become known. And this, of course, will be an important moment in the case of a full investigation of this tragedy and punishment of the guilty, said Aliyev.
- On the morning of December 25, 2024, an Azerbaijan Airlines plane headed to Grozny crashed near the Kazakh city of Aktau. The official causes of the disaster have not yet been determined. Kazakhstan authorities reported that 38 of the 67 people on board died as a result of the incident, including two airline pilots.
- On December 26, 2024, Euronews, citing sources in the Azerbaijani government, reported that a preliminary investigation indicated that the crash was caused by a Russian surface-to-air missile.
- On December 27, 2024, Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, confirmed in a comment to The War Zone publication that the plane of “Azerbaijan Airlines” was shot down by a Russian missile.
- On December 29, 2024, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, announced that the “Azerbaijan Airlines” plane that crashed in Kazakhstan was fired upon from the ground near the Russian city of Grozny. It was disabled by means of electronic warfare (EW).
