Google Deepmind has presented a new artificial intelligence model capable of predicting the trajectory and the intensity of tropical cyclones with high accuracy. This is a significant breakthrough in The branches of meteorology, where traditional physical models could not cope with the tasks of this level of complexity.
The system is able to form up to 50 variants of the development of a storm 15 days before the peak of activity. The model focuses on tropical cyclones, including hurricanes and typhoons. It not only monitors the change of the storm of the storm, but also predicts wind power – a key parameter for an accurate early warning.
According to DeepMind, the system often gives more accurate estimates than traditional methods. For example, it can distinguish a storm with a wind 120 kilometers per hour from catastrophic with gusts of 250 kilometers per hour, capable of destroying homes.
DeepMind also opened access to a new WestherLab Visualizer WaterLab that allows you to study and compare the new model forecasts with previous versions, including Graphcast and Gencast. The platform will be open to researchers and the general public.

The new Deepmind model is integrated into the work of the US National Hurricane Center for the first time when the State Meteorological Service officially cooperates with the Shi company to improve the accuracy of warnings.
According to the Scientific and Operational Director of the Center Wallace Gogset, it is a “potentially powerful partnership” between AI and experienced meteorologists, the purpose of which is to save life. The agreement is drawn up in Crada (Cooperative Research and Development Agreement), which opens access to the state of private sector innovation.
Over the last 50 years, tropical cyclones have caused more than $ 1.4 trillion losses to the world economy, so improving precision accuracy can be crucial to millions of people in coastal risk areas.
We will remind, this month astronomers used AI to process data on the black hole in the center of our galaxy.
