The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy has decided to dismiss Maxim Ostapenko from the position of Director General of the National Reserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra”. He reported this on his Facebook page, adding a photo of the relevant order to the post.
– This day had to be different. While we were preparing a large -scale exhibition in the Lavra, I received the news that was a surprise – by order of the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine I was dismissed from the post of the head of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve. Without explanations. Without warnings. Without any official comments about my work, – Ostapenko wrote.
According to Up. Culture, Ostapenko added that it was at this time that preparations for the Great Exhibition “Mazepa. Strategy of European Ukraine” – the largest collection of exhibits dedicated to Mazepa and his era continued. Seven museums participate in the project. The opening of the exhibition is scheduled for tomorrow, May 23, in the reserve.
Ostapenko added that rumors have been actively spreading about the hidden struggle for the impact and control of Lavra.
– We felt pressure. Obviously, it was uncomfortable for someone that we spoke out loud about the need to clean the laurel from imperial narratives. Someone interfered with the truth. Someone is our principle, ”he added, and hopes that he will be able to get an explanation for himself and the team as to what is happening.
The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine reported the dismissal of Ostapenko from the position of CEO of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra due to violation of the reserve and failure to comply with the contract. The order of dismissal was signed on May 21, 2025 on the basis of a note of the Director of the Department of Protection and Preservation of the Cultural Heritage of the ICSC Vladimir Shornikov.
– In early May, the CEO of the Reserve was declared a reprimand, which he was introduced personally. The reprimand was announced on the basis of the report of the MCCC working group, formed to study the current state of accounting, use and conservation of state property, which is in the operational management of the reserve. The working group also checked compliance with the boundaries and modes of use of the territory and buffer zone of the cultural heritage object, – the ministry noted.
According to “UP. Culture”, Maxim Ostapenko is a Ukrainian archaeologist, a scientist, a serviceman of the Armed Forces, the Cavalier of the Order of Merit of III degree.
On October 28, 2023 he headed the National Reserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra”. Before that, since 2007, he headed the Khortytsia National Reserve, where he and the team found a number of unique archeological sites and killed the construction of the Zaporozhye Sich historical and cultural complex. After the start of a full -scale invasion of the Russian Federation joined the Armed Forces.
