According to Bloomberg, after an informal meeting of foreign ministers of the EU countries, which took place on May 8 in Warsaw, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen told reporters. She stressed that the European Commission “has a complete mandate”.
“If in the future some sanctions will lose their effectiveness, or something else happens, we will still have these duties,” said the head of the Finnish Foreign Ministry.
Journalists emphasize that this proposal sounded against Hungary’s reluctance to continue sanctions imposed by the European Union after a full -scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine. These measures include the freezing of sovereign assets of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation for the amount of about 200 billion euros, which are mainly held in EU financial institutions, as well as restrictions for hundreds of persons, ships and organizations that contributed and in a variety of supporting the Russian war or even participated in it.
EU sanctions continue everywhere on the basis of unanimity-the decision should be supported by all 27 EU Member States. Hungary has repeatedly threatened to veto it, but every time she retreated after some concessions about issues that were often not even related.
According to the High EU representative on Foreign Relations and Security Policy, Kai Callas on the next EU Council of Ministers, which will take place on May 20, may be approved by the 17th EU sanction package. It will be concentrated primarily on the military infrastructure of the Russian Federation, its “shadow fleet” and its support and will include approximately 140 new vessels, mostly tankers, as well as 70 organizations and individuals.
The Russian energy company “Surglutnaftogaz”, which has been imposed by US sanctions, will probably fall under new restrictions. In addition, 15 new persons and organizations involved in hybrid threats and the probable use of toxic substances can be included in the “black lists” – last year the organization to ban chemical weapons (OPHZ) recorded the use of tear gas at the front but did not install the perpetrators.
