The British magazine The Economist has published a traditional cover-prediction for 2025, where the main trends of the next year are encrypted in the form of a puzzle. In the center of the illustration you can see the future US President Donald Trump, and around him – the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi, the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, the President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the British writer Jane Austen.

Also on the cover features a dollar, rocket, saturn, yuan, syringe, fist and nuclear weapons.

The editor of the publication, Tom Standage, outlined 10 topics encrypted on the cover and which The Economist suggests paying attention to in 2025:

  • The choice of Trump by the Americans and its consequences. This could lead to geopolitical changes, increased tensions, and even the use of nuclear weapons.
  • Expectation of changes after the elections in different countries of the world. Will the new leaders be able to deliver on what they promised? If not, riots may break out.
  • Increasing disorder. Trump can push Ukraine to an agreement with Russia and free Israel’s hands in its conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.
  • Trade war between America and China
  • Leap of green technologies. Exports of Chinese solar panels exceeded forecasts. And the world will soon know whether global emissions have peaked.
  • The end of inflation. Central bankers celebrated the victory over inflation. Western economies now face a new challenge: to reduce the deficit by raising taxes, cutting spending or accelerating growth.
  • Age of world leaders. America elected its oldest president. World leaders are graying with their populations. There will be more discussion of age limits for political leaders.
  • Artificial intelligence.
  • Population migration. Backlash against “overtourism” will ease in 2025, but restrictions imposed by many cities from Amsterdam to Venice will remain.
  • Surprises Through assassination attempts, exploding walkie-talkies and giant rockets hijacked by chopsticks, one of the lessons of 2024 has been to expect the unbelievable. What unbelievable things can happen in 2025?
  • In a year that promises an unusual degree of change and uncertainty, The World Ahead helps you see around the corner and work out what might be coming next https://t.co/5eotaGijBO pic.twitter.com/EJAUnG1xWC

    • In 2024, The Economist’s puzzle cover featured images of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, Russian President Volodymyr Putin, current and former US Presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
    • In 2023, the puzzle cover of The Economist featured pictures of six world leaders: Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Joe Biden, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, new Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni, and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.
