cash price of popular weight loss drugs Wegovy and drugs approved for people with Ozempic fell 30% in the U.S. on Monday, according to Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company that makes both drugs.
The new monthly cost of any GLP-1 drug will be $349, up from the current price of $499, for customers who who do not use insurance, the company said. The new prices will go into effect Monday at 70,000 retail pharmacies and other locations, including Walmart and Costco’s, the drugmaker said.

Wegovy’s previous cash price matched the price of a full dose of Zepbound, a competing drug from competitor Eli Lilly.
“As pioneers in the GLP-1 class, we are committed to ensuring that genuine, FDA-approved Wegovy and Ozempic are affordable and accessible to those who need them,” Dave Moore, Novo Nordisk’s executive vice president, said in a statement. “The U.S. health care system is complex, with different types of insurance and different ways for patients to get their medications. Our new cost-effective offerings have an immediate impact, providing greater savings for those who are currently uninsured or choose to obtain self-pay.”

Moore added that the price reduction is “part of a larger strategy to expand access, which includes building relationships with telemedicine providers and major retailers, expanding coverage and working with the administration to lower costs for people living with chronic conditions such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.”
