Ukrainian defenders captured two military personnel from North Korea in the Kursk region of Russia. Our security forces are already interrogating them. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyi in his Telegram channel.
– Our soldiers captured soldiers from North Korea in Kurshchyna. These are two soldiers who, although they were wounded, survived, were taken to Kyiv, and are communicating with SBU investigators. This task was not easy: usually the Russians and other military from North Korea finish off their own wounded and are doing everything to ensure that evidence of the participation of another state – North Korea – in the war against Ukraine is not preserved, – said the president.
The SBU press service added that it is about two North Korean soldiers, one of whom was captured on January 9 by fighters of tactical group No. 84 of the SZH, and the other by paratroopers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the time of his capture, one of the North Korean soldiers was carrying a Russian-style military ID issued in the name of another person with registration in the Republic of Tuva. During the interrogation, he stated that the document was issued to him in the fall of 2024, when some of the combat units of the DPRK were coordinating with Russian military groups.
– He himself stated that he was born in 2005, held the position of a rifleman and served in the military in North Korea since 2021. It is noteworthy that the prisoner, like the Russian military at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, emphasizes that he was allegedly going for training, and not for the war against Ukraine, the message says.
As noted in the department, another prisoner of war confirmed the testimony of his partner. He gave part of the answers to the questions in writing, because his jaw was injured. According to preliminary data, he was born in 1999, and has been serving in the North Korean army since 2016 as a sniper-reconnaissance.
The special service emphasized that the prisoners were provided with all necessary medical care, in accordance with the Geneva Convention. After that, they were sent to Kyiv for investigative measures. Interrogation with North Koreans is carried out with the help of an interpreter, since they do not speak foreign languages. Based on this fact, an investigation was started under Art. 437 of the Criminal Code “Planning, preparation, unleashing and waging an aggressive war.”
- On January 7, operators of the 8th regiment of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed 13 North Korean servicemen in the Kursk region. Five North Korean soldiers were eliminated during the execution of special operations in a shooting battle, the remaining eight – with the help of drones.
