In protest, several testers uploaded OpenAI’s not-yet-public AI video generator Sora to the Hugging Face platform.
November 26 appeared on the site API for an application that allows others to access the model and create videos. The authors of the accompanying letter accused OpenAI of using unpaid human labor.
“We are not against the use of artificial intelligence technology in art. […] What we disagree with is how the artist program was launched and how the tool is shaping up ahead of a possible public release,” the letter reads.
A few hours later, the AI startup disabled early access for artists. Some users managed to test the tool and publish their work on social networks.

In early 2024, OpenAI presented Sora initially to a limited group of people in order to collect feedback on the product and improve it. According to the testers, they “provide free advertising to a company valued at $150 billion.”
Sam Altman’s firm commented on the incident, saying that use of the AI solution is voluntary and does not require feedback, and that artists testing the tool are required to refrain from divulging confidential information.
Recall that in June, the Toys “R” Us company faced a wave of criticism after releasing an advertisement created entirely using Sora’s generative artificial intelligence.
Filmmaker Paul Trillo previously used the tool to create the first AI video for indie musician Washed Out.
