After escaping with his mother from his alcoholic father, Stalin was sent to a seminary in Tbilisi. But he was not religious. Instead, he was fascinated by “revolutionary texts”.

“I think it became quite clear to him that the things he hated in his world, the poverty, the brutality of the Russian officers and the secret police, could not be solved through religion. At first Stalin was more nationalistic and wanted to raise the position of Georgia in the Russian Empire. But quite quickly he becomes a socialist,” says de Orellana.

According to him, Stalin was convinced that everything had to change, and that the changes had to be violent and revolutionary.

“His early activities consisted of labor strikes, writing pamphlets, organizing labor movements. He organizes workers’ strikes to demand the right to higher wages. He also collects money for revolutionary causes and begins to establish contacts with larger revolutionary groups,” the expert continues.

In the early 1900s, Stalin clashed with the Mensheviks, the largest revolutionary group in the Caucasus. Then he became attached to Leninism. Lenin led the Bolsheviks, who sought an immediate revolution by the forces of dedicated revolutionaries. During the formation of the Bolshevik Party, the future dictator was an important source of funding.

“Stalin seems to have had a knack for masterminding crime from the start. Stalin is a bit like Robin Hood. Although Stalin was not a gifted orator, he had excellent interpersonal and manipulative skills, an important skill in a violent criminal enterprise. Stalin would have been an ideal leader of a mafia family. He had charisma, leadership, incredible intelligence, organizational know-how,” says de Orelyana.

Stalin also kept thugs around him, some of whom feared Stalin, foreshadowing his later regime’s web of terror, he said.

“If Leninism aimed at an immediate revolution, Stalin was the ideal person to carry it out,” says the historian.

He says that in 1907, Stalin took part in an armed robbery of a bank stagecoach on Yerevan Square in Tbilisi. But among other Bolsheviks he was an outsider.

“First, he wasn’t middle-class, wealthy and educated like most of the others. … He had an accent. He wasn’t Russian, he didn’t speak French and German. He didn’t have an international outlook. But he proved his worth “, the researcher summarizes.
