The Solana Development team has introduced a high-speed Alpenglow consensus, which ensures the finalization of transactions within 100-150 ms. It’s in over 100 times faster than current network performance.

Alpenglow implements the concept of “optimistic confirmation”, which allows to achieve subsecunda finalization. Current network delay exceeds 12 seconds. Thanks to the new Solana protocol, it plans to reach the level of delays, as web2 services.

Alpenglow will be the largest upgrade of the base level of Solana since its launch. The initiative involves the replacement of the current mechanisms of consensus Towerbft and Proof-of-History with the components of Votor and Rotor.
VOTOR is responsible for the quick voting and finalization of blocks. With the participation of 80% of the nodes, the block is confirmed for one round, 60% for two. In both cases, the finalization comes immediately after the fastest processes are completed.
Rotor redistributes the load between the validators in proportion to their stacking proportion, eliminating a narrow place in the form of a single leader and increasing the capacity.
“Do not convey with the words that the developer feels when he works with only two blocks instead of a whole era with a bunch of unconfirmed transactions,” – said Solana co -founder Anatoly Yakovenko.
The alpenglow prototype is already working. Testing in the public environment will start in a few months. Activation in the main network is expected this year through appropriate Simd.
